Identity in ’12 Years a Slave’

During my American Literature class, I tried to find slave narrative literary themes in the 2013 film “12 Years a Slave.”

“The film is his struggle to return to his original personal and legal status of freedom while also blending in to the environment of slave labor in order to survive.”

Relinquishing the Self

In my American Literature class, I analyzed John Woolman’s abolitionist efforts prior to the Civil War.

“His experience as a public speaker and teacher allowed him to develop a method of dialog with slave owners that was constructive rather than accusatory and that contained a logic that was easy to understand.”
